We have known for 25 years that Switzerland will give in immediately if the US wants something from it. Initially, we engaged in some bizarre power struggles, such as when Switzerland refused to extradite Glencore founder Marc Rich, even though he had evaded $48 million in taxes, violated export regulations in the US and circumvented US sanctions against Iran. The NZZ found it all “minor offences” in 2000 and expressed what many people thought at the time.
