Editorial: inflation – Journal L’Economiste du Faso

14 % in 2022, peaking at 18% in August. Burkina Faso is one of the countries in the sub-region hardest hit by price inflation. The official causes are the consequences of Covid-19, the security crisis and the effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war. But it wouldn’t be just that.

On the occasion of the panel on resilience, organized by your Journal, one of the experts recalled that the monthly price index for imported products had peaked at 6.5%, while that of local products was at a peak of 23.4%. % in June 2022. However, since April 2020, the price index for local products has grown faster than that for imported products. Taken aback, some participants did not understand this hiatus.

The costs of the production factors would have something to do with the increase in the prices of fertilizers and fuel which might be passed on by the producers. However, without being categorical, some observers think that the share of speculation in this vertiginous rise in the prices of local products is not negligible.

As a result, imported products are more accessible than those produced locally. So what regarding local consumption policy? The actors therefore need to talk to each other, because the current circle is not virtuous.o
