Jan Smit last night called his thirty-year career ‘a roller coaster’ with ‘ups and downs’. Smit did not expect his son Senn to bring the prize. “Now that’s a surprise.”

The jury chairman, radio DJ Daniël Dekker, praised Smit’s oeuvre and his contribution to Dutch music at the table. “The jury notes that his oeuvre now has almost 80 gold and platinum awards, supported by more than 20 number 1 hits.”

‘Dutch Grammys’

According to the jury, the Edison Pop Oeuvre Prize can be compared to the American Grammy Awards. The Edison is the oldest music prize in the Netherlands. The statue has been awarded annually since 1960.

The lifetime achievement award went to Kensington last year. Previously, for example, The Opposites, Willeke Alberti, Ilse DeLange, Extince, Anouk, Tiësto and Thé Lau won.

Apart from the Oeuvre Prize, there are other Edisons. These prizes will be awarded on Monday in the AFAS Theater in Leusden.
