Announced last week, the Motorola Edge 40 Neo is another mid-range smartphone option from the brand that might arrive in Brazil soon.

The device has an attractive design, a vegan leather finish and its hardware also draws attention with the presence of a 144 Hz pOLED screen, 50 MP camera and Dimensity 7030 chipset.

But is it a good choice compared to options from Samsung or even Redmi? The TudoCelular group has already had access to the Edge 40 Neo and will provide first impressions in this quick hands-on.

Design and accessories

The Motorola Edge 40 Neo follows the brand’s standard design line for this family. According to the manufacturer, the device uses 60% recycled material and this is something that follows the trend of having an environmentally friendly device.

The packaging is made from completely recycled material and there are no plastics, and inside we have the manuals, a USB-C cable and also a 68 Watt fast charger.

On the back of the Edge 40 Neo we have a vegan leather finish that gives a soft touch and that premium smartphone impression.

Furthermore, the camera module is slightly protruding and holds two cameras with LED flash. The Edge 40 Neo has all its sides more matte.

The front has a display with a centralized hole and of course the Edge screen has curved side edges. To complete this topic, we have to say that the Edge 40 Neo is a smartphone that is IP68 certified once morest water and dust.

The smartphone also has stereo sound with an audio output at the bottom and an upper secondary channel, in addition to the SIM chip drawer being located next to the USB-C port.

The Edge 40 Neo is a single-SIM smartphone, but you can add a virtual SIM from your carrier.

Screen and hardware

Starting with the display, the Motorola Edge 40 Neo has a 6.55-inch pOLED screen with curved sides, 144 Hz rate and integrated fingerprint reader.

In our initial tests, it was possible to notice that this sensor is well calibrated and easily recognizes the registered fingers. The maximum brightness of this display reaches 1300 nits and you can also modify the refresh rate to guarantee more autonomy.

Motorola included the MediaTek Dimensity 7030 chipset in this Edge 40 Neo and it works with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.

In everyday life, this set should guarantee a fluid experience when browsing the web, using social networks and also when capturing photos. In games, it is possible to play several titles in good quality.

Of course, heavier games will require more and you will have to choose to disable some features and reduce quality, but this is not something that brings this smartphone down.

The battery is 5,000 mAh and supports fast charging of up to 68 Watts. This is enough to guarantee two days away from the socket, as well as little time tied to it if you need to recharge.

Finally, in terms of connectivity, the Motorola Edge 40 Neo has dual-band Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, eSIM and NFC for contactless payments.

Software

On the Motorola Edge 40 Neo we have Android 13 underneath the company’s slightly modified interface. The software is very well optimized and has great navigability.

Additionally, you can access Motorola’s extra features in the app to turn on the flashlight by shaking it, open the camera and much more.

The brand also offers some customization points and here we have the side menu so you can quickly access your favorite applications from anywhere in the interface.

In short, Motorola’s interface is a good old acquaintance and here on the Edge 40 Neo it is competent to deliver something fluid.

Not to mention that the Edge 40 Neo is equipped with Ready For so you can enjoy a desktop interface when connecting your smartphone to a monitor with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

And for those concerned regarding longevity, Motorola proposes to deliver two major Android updates and five total years of security updates.

In other words, the Edge 40 Neo goes up to Android 15.

Cmeras

The Motorola Edge 40 Neo was announced with a 50-megapixel main sensor, which features optical image stabilization. This sensor is also capable of recording videos in 4K resolution at 30 fps.

Generally speaking, this camera can take good photos, but it tends to exaggerate the saturation and this becomes evident when looking at some colors, such as red.

Activating HDR mode also doesn’t provide the same effectiveness as you can find on other mid-range smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy A54, for example.

Here we have a certain exaggeration of post-processing and this delivers results that I can classify as Ok. This is because there is good detail capture.

The 13 MP ultrawide lens does a good job and is as expected for the category. Of course we say this when we take into account the ideal scenario.

In other words, photos with good lighting and during the day. The nighttime results from the ultrawide camera are not good and this makes it very clear that the optical stabilization present in the main lens is lacking.

The smartphone also has a dedicated macro mode in the software, but you will need to get very close to the objects to get acceptable results. This is because we have a low dynamic range.

Focusing on objects is also a thankless task. So, it’s a feature that won’t be very useful, but if you want a macro photo, you can take a chance here. Still, this approach is better than a useless 2MP lens on the back.

Moving on to the selfie camera, it has 32 MP and, despite this high number, the photos give the impression of a cheap smartphone. Even deactivating all available beauty modes, we have washed out images. At least, to compensate, the front lens does very well in video calls.

This indicates that Motorola can simply improve the results of this sensor and the others with a brief software update.

First impressions

The Motorola Edge 40 Neo is not yet scheduled to arrive here in Brazil, but it is a smartphone that might confuse a lot of people depending on the price it reaches the national market.

Want an example? Its launch price abroad is 400 euros and this is something that makes the Edge 40 much more attractive. In direct conversion, we are talking regarding around R$2,100.

However, the Edge 40 costs 350 euros, around R$1,817. Here in Brazil, the Edge 40 can also be found for around R$2,700 on sale.

If the Edge 40 Neo arrives with a price in this range or slightly below, it’s still worth getting the Edge 40.

This is because you end up taking a much more complete smartphone home. Looking at the competition, you might also end up getting the Galaxy A54 with its promotional price of R$1,600 or even the Redmi Note 12 Pro, which occasionally appears at a cool price on the gray market.

Still, generally speaking, the Edge 40 Neo has no serious defects or problems. It is a competent smartphone in terms of hardware, it has a good design and also ok cameras. Motorola just needs to be careful with pricing here in Brazil.

But this is something that only time will tell. So let’s give it time.

The Motorola Edge 40 Neo is not yet available in Brazilian stores. To be notified when it arrives.
