Edgard Kesteloot: A Pioneer in Nature Conservation and Belgian Wildlife

Edgard Kesteloot was a prominent figure in the protection of nature in Belgium. In addition to having been the co-founder and honorary president of the Natural and Ornithological Reserves of Belgium (RNOB), the man also held the position of president of the Belgian Foundation for the conservation of habitats and was a member of the Education Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. He is also the author of numerous works on the natural environments of Belgium.

But it was as designer and scientific consultant of the Extraordinary Garden, the oldest RTBF television program still in existence, that he made himself known to the general public.

He will be ennobled in 2002 by King Albert II, who will grant him the title of baron. Ten years later, in 2012, his name will be given to a nature reserve in the Liège region. He will also be awarded, a decade later, the Birdlife international conservation achievement award, which rewards projects and people involved in nature conservation.
