As can be seen on Flightradar24, an Edelweiss plane en route from Zurich to Cape Town, South Africa, had to return to Zurich. Edelweiss confirms this.

Media spokesman Andreas Meier responded to a 20-minute query: “During flight WK86 from Zurich to Cape Town on August 30, Edelweiss was confronted with changed conditions for an overflight by the Mauritanian authorities. Entry into Mauritanian airspace was denied. For this reason, the flight had to return to Zurich.”

“Passengers have been rebooked”

It also says that “due to political unrest and the resulting security considerations of the airlines in the Lufthansa Group, Edelweiss is currently not flying over the airspaces of Mali, Niger, Libya and Sudan”. Mauritania has an air corridor that is considered safe for flights to southern Africa.

“Our affected passengers from flight WK86 and the subsequently planned return flight from Cape Town were rebooked on alternative connections.”
