This Thursday, we learned that EDC, a neighbor and client of Claudia Van Der Stichelen who was shot dead at her home, was arrested by the police. His neighbors did not believe him capable of having killed the lawyer. His brother-in-law, LVB, was also interviewed by the police.
The two men, one of whom had a motive, were released by police. José Masschelin, criminal journalist, spoke to our colleagues at 7/7 regarding this release.
He initially wants to be reassuring: “It is not because they are at liberty that the two brothers-in-law cannot be the subject of an investigation. There are sufficient means to monitor them. Their phones can be wiretapped, they can be followed,” he says.
According to him, the authorities might have voluntarily released them to monitor them. “Sometimes it is smarter to release suspects, to give them the impression that they have been completely exonerated in the case. The released suspects then sometimes become more talkative and tell others things that they do not know. “shouldn’t have said. Or else they’re taking the investigators down another trail.”
A scenario which would not have been possible if the two men were still in police custody. “If you completely cut off a potential offender from his environment, he may not want to say anything at all. It’s a different story if you let him interact with other people. On the other hand, investigators must ensure that potential suspects do not strike once more,” he warns.
The expert analyzed the profile of the two brothers-in-law. EDC had a disagreement with his lawyer but seemed incapable of committing the murder. LVB was in contact with the first suspect on the day of the crime and had a weapon at his home. But it is still difficult to estimate their responsibility in this affair. “Doubt is growing among investigators. (…) It seems to me that this author was not really a professional. The investigation can still take many directions, but time is running out, he still confides”
