When we think of skin diseases, we often think of anti-acne treatments, the impact on social life, the role of diet, etc. but we think much less often of the link between skin problems and sleep disorders! However, a recent study1 highlighted theimpact of skin diseases on sleep quality …
Skin problems and sleep disorders: is there a link?
If you are wondering how skin problems can affect sleep qualityit’s probably because you are lucky not to be one of the 16 million French people (i.e. 1 in 3 people)2 who suffer from a skin disease… Because, for Doctor Marketa Saint Aroman, medical director Pierre Fabre Dermo Cosmétique1The conclusion is clear : “nearly half of patients with skin diseases suffer from sleep disorders” ! In question ? Discomforts felt by people suffering from skin problems during the night, which prevent them from sleeping well, including:
Although their intensity varies depending on the severity of the outbreaks, they concern the vast majority of people suffering from skin problems since 68% of people suffering from eczema, 67% of people suffering from hand eczema, 63% of people suffering psoriasis, 59% of people with rosacea, 54% of people with vitiligo and 53% of people with acne.
- THE burning or tingling sensations concern 16% to 20% of patients suffering from skin diseases,
- THE skin pain (between 11% and 25% of people depending on the skin disease concerned).
When acne, eczema and psoriasis affect daily quality of life
And the problems of people with skin diseases are not just regarding wasted nights! Because following complicated nights, you have to face days that are a little more difficult. The 16 million French people affected by skin diseases are therefore more likely, during the day, to:
- feeling a feeling of fatigue upon waking up (a symptom felt by 81% compared to 64% in the population not affected by a skin disease),
- periods of sleepiness during the day (83% vs 71%),
- of the tingling in the eyesx (58% vs 42%)
- of the burning or stinging sensations in the eyes (58 % vs 42 %)
- of the repeated yawning (72 % vs 58 %).
A double penalty for the growing proportion of people suffering from skin diseases…
