- The authorities of that country affirmed that the decision was made based on the “legitimate will of the Venezuelan people” that was expressed at the polls.
The government of Ecuador announced on Friday, August 2, its support and recognition of opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia as the winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela, considering that there was “an evident manipulation of results” by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner.
In a statement posted on social media, President Daniel Noboa said that Edmundo González is “the legitimate winner,” a recognition that “is based on respect for the legitimate will of the people of this nation, expressed forcefully at the polls and supported by the people with their mobilization in the streets over the last few days.”
“It is about principles. At these crucial and decisive moments, we have a moral obligation, without room for hesitation or lukewarmness, to say out loud which side we are on. We proudly say: we are not on the side of indolence. What is happening there concerns us all,” Noboa said in his writing.
In this way, Ecuador joined other governments such as those of the United States, Argentina, Peru and Uruguay, which issued similar statements to recognize the former Venezuelan ambassador as the elected leader.
Election results
The CNE issued the first bulletin with the results of the presidential elections early on Monday, July 29, and declared Nicolás Maduro the winner.
Later, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) claimed that Edmundo González was the winner of the elections by a large majority of votes. On Tuesday, July 30, a web page was enabled where the results of the voting table in which each user is registered can be consulted by entering their ID number.
According to the opposition coalition, González obtained more than 7 million votes, with 81.85% of the votes, compared to the more than 3 million votes that Maduro obtained.
Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Ecuador
Since 2018, diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Ecuador have been broken and have been handled at a consular level.
However, since April 2024, the Maduro government has also closed consulates in Ecuadorian territory in solidarity with Mexico for the police assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glas, a former vice president of Rafael Correa (2007-2017).
There are currently around 445,000 Venezuelan migrants and refugees residing in Ecuador, who are part of the approximately 7.7 million people who have emigrated from Venezuela in recent years due to its economic crisis, according to data from the Regional Interagency Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela (R4V).
Countries that have recognized Edmundo González’s victory
Several international spokesmen have called for thorough reviews of the election results in Venezuela after the CNE presented a first bulletin without specifying a breakdown by state.
Following these statements, on July 29, the Venezuelan government demanded that Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay “the withdrawal, immediately, of its representatives in Venezuelan territory”, in rejection of its “interventionist actions and statements” regarding the presidential elections.
In response, and due to the CNE’s failure to present data, Argentina, the United States, Peru and Uruguay have expressed their support for the vote counting records presented by opposition leader María Corina Machado, which represent 80% of the votes and give victory to the former Venezuelan ambassador.
The government of Peru was the first nation to recognize Edmundo González as the winner of the presidential elections on Sunday, July 28, following announcements by Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea on Tuesday, July 30.
“This position is shared by many countries, governments and international organizations,” the Peruvian foreign minister told state-run TV Peru.
On August 1, the U.S. government recognized opposition candidate Edmundo González as the winner of Venezuela’s presidential election.
