Ecuador is the first country in homicides per capita in Latin America

Ecuador became the first country in Latin America in homicides per capita, with a rate of 47,2 per 100.000 inhabitants in 2023, eight times higher than in 2016.

A new massacre in the Durán canton, Guayas, Ecuador, left at least six people murdered and four others injured, as confirmed by local authorities.

The massacre occurred in one of the most violent areas of the country and was allegedly carried out by a criminal gang.

According to local media reports, a group of armed men broke into a house and opened fire on its occupants and then fled.

“We cannot continue allowing these events to continue to be repeated, to the point that there are 270 deaths so far this year,” Durán councilor Hugo Obando said on social network X.

“All of us who are authorities must do our best to provide serious solutions. “Do not generate uncertainty due to political calculations by posing resignations as a threat,” he added.

Based on the situation in this territory, the Government of Daniel Noboa decided to take the canton with the Armed Forces and the Police. In Durán, two criminal gangs confront each other, the Chone Killers and Latin Kings, declared terrorists by the Executive.
