Ecuador counter-sue Mexico before the ICJ for granting asylum to Jorge Glas

This Monday, the government of Ecuador filed a counterclaim before the international Court of Justice (ICJ) once morest Mexico, considering that The agreement regulating diplomatic asylum was disrespected by granting the benefit to former Vice President Jorge Glas.

Ecuador’s action before the ICJ responds to an initial complaint that Mexico filed before the organization in which it claimed the violation of the inviolability of its diplomatic headquarters during the invasion of the Quito office by the Ecuadorian police.

In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador indicated that the counterclaim is due to alleged interference in internal affairs, following days before the arrest, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, linked the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio with the victory of Daniel Noboa in the presidential elections.

According to the action taken by Ecuador, it is declared that Mexico “has failed to fulfil its obligations to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State, not to interfere in the internal affairs of the receiving State and not to use the premises of the mission in a manner incompatible with the functions of the diplomatic mission, in accordance with Article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961”.

Likewise, it was claimed that Mexico to fail to comply “their obligations not to grant asylum to persons who are being prosecuted or tried for common crimes or who have been convicted by competent ordinary courts, and to hand them over to the competent local authorities”.
