  • The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry enabled an online platform to request the procedure. It is aimed at migrant whose Virte is still valid and about to expire

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador reported that it has already begun the process of renewing the Exceptional Temporary Residence Visa (Virte) for Venezuelan migrants. This can be done online through the eVisas platform of the Foreign Ministry of that country.

In a statement published on September 27, he recalled that the procedure is intended for Venezuelans whose Virte visa is currently valid and within the period of 30 days prior to its expiration date. It should be remembered that the document allows legal residence in that country for two years, and can only be renewed once to extend its validity for two more years.

The request can be made online from any device. To enter the system you must already have a user account and password created on the ministry’s Digital Services page.

How to renew the Virte Visa?

Once you log in to the Digital Services page, you must check the “Visas” option on the left of the menu and then the “New procedure” option in the upper right corner. Then, in the “Choose service” button, the Renewal option must be checked.

If the document to be renewed does not appear, you must press the “Register Visa” button and complete the form with all the requested information. It is important at this point to choose temporary resident in the immigration quality field, and then specify Temporary Residence-Virte in the visa type field. Afterwards, the expiration date of the visa is set.

Once all the steps have been completed, you return to the previous screen and select the registered document. The renewal process may take a while if the visa has just been registered in the system, which is why a red notification appears when completing the process.

According to the Interagency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants (R4V), Ecuador is the fifth country with the largest Venezuelan diaspora in Latin America, with an estimated population of 444 thousand migrants. In fact, it is the largest foreign community in that country, followed by Colombians (62,494), Cubans (24,461) and Americans (13,204).

Based on figures from the Ministry of the Interior of Ecuador and the Flow Monitoring and Characterization System (SMFCF), the latest R4V report reports a decrease in the Venezuelan population in Ecuador until March 2024. It points out that compared to the first quarter of 2023, more than 30 thousand migrants left that country.

This trend was also evident in Argentina, with around 53 thousand fewer Venezuelans compared to the previous year, as well as Colombia (with a decrease of 18,215 Venezuelans) and Costa Rica (357 fewer). However, this does not mean that migrants are returning to their country or that the diaspora has been reduced, since in other countries such as Brazil, Chile or Uruguay the number of migrants increased significantly, and in total the region registered an increase of 51,915 migrants. Venezuelans between 2023 and 2024.
