The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected a proposal by Niger’s ruling junta for a three-year transition period to restore democracy, a commissioner from the regional bloc said on Monday.

The West African countries opposed to the coup in Niger rejected, on Monday August 21, the idea of a transition of three years maximum launched by the military junta.
ECOWAS commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah told Archyde.com the position remained clear: “Release Bazoum without preconditions, restore order to constitutional order without further delay,” he said in response to a question on the postponement of the elections.
Junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani said on Saturday August 19 that the military junta that seized power on July 26 would launch a national dialogue to consult on a transition to democracy that “should not last more than three years”.
An ECOWAS delegation had met General Tiani and President Mohamed Bazoum in the capital, Niamey, earlier in the day.
