ECOWAS Rejects Junta’s Three-Year Transition Proposal in Niger: Restore Constitutional Order Without Delay

“Release Bazoum without preconditions, restore constitutional order without further delay,” Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, said of the junta’s proposal, stressing that the position of the regional bloc remained clear.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected a proposal by the ruling junta in Niger providing for a three-year transition period to restore democracy, a commissioner from the regional bloc said on Monday.

Over the weekend, General Abdourahamane Tiani, leader of the putschists who overthrew the democratically elected president on July 26 Mohamed Bazoumdeclared that the junta would launch a national dialogue with a view to a democratic transition which “should not last more than three years”. He made this announcement after meeting on Saturday in the capital Niamey with a delegation from ECOWAS, who also met Mohamed Bazoum the same day.

In the wake of Rebellion last month, ECOWAS initially set a one-week ultimatum for the junta to restore constitutional order, otherwise threatening a military intervention in the country. While Mali and Burkina Faso, neighboring countries also led by juntas, have given their support to the Nigerien putschists, ECOWAS has since been trying to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis, while preparing for a possible armed intervention.
