The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected the plan for a 3-year transitional government in Niger proposed by the military junta that seized power on July 26.

Abdel Fattah Moussa, the commissioner for political affairs, peace and security in the group, said in an interview with the “BBC” channel, that the transitional plan for 3 years in Niger is “unacceptable.”

Moussa pointed out that this proposal is nothing but a “smoke curtain” for dialogue and diplomacy.

“The sooner the army returns power to civilians and focuses on its core responsibilities, such as defending Niger’s territorial integrity, the better,” he added.

Yesterday, Sunday, the head of the military council in Niger, Abd al-Rahman Tiani, announced that the transition to civil rule in the country would be completed within a maximum period of 3 years.

Since last July 26, the National Council for the Protection of the Homeland in Niger has been holding President Mohamed Bazoum and members of his family following he was removed from power and the constitution suspended.
