The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says it is “determined to find a negotiated solution to the political impasse”, immediately following the announcement of the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the ECOWAS, according to a press release issued on Sunday in Abuja.
“Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali remain important members of the Community and the Authority (of Heads of State) remains determined to find a negotiated solution to the political impasse,” the ECOWAS Commission said in this press release.
The three countries announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS this Sunday, in a joint press release read on the public televisions of these states.
The respective leaders of the three Sahelian States, “taking all their responsibilities in the face of history and responding to the expectations, concerns and aspirations of their populations, decide in complete sovereignty on the immediate withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States,” underlines the joint press release.
The ECOWAS Commission says it has not yet received “direct formal notification” regarding the intention of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to withdraw from the Community.
The decision of the three countries might produce considerable effects, for example for the movement of goods and people, for the three countries concerned, without access to the sea, and for the region. It also has implications for visa exemptions and tax exemptions, with knock-on effects on prices.
