US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on an African tour, sought Tuesday to counter democratic decline in West Africa during talks with two key partners, Nigeria and Ivory Coast, by calling for a fight against extremism beyond a strictly military approach.

Also in the news: in Tunisia, the space for political protest is shrinking. More than fifty people are imprisoned in cases of alleged conspiracy against state security or on the basis of a decree punishing the dissemination of false information, without trial. The majority are political opponents of President Kaïs Saïed and the justice system communicates little on the cases. For the prisoners’ families and lawyers, the wait for trials is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Senegal-Guinea match counting for the 3rd day of CAN 2023 was followed with great passion by supporters of both countries. In Dakar our reporters followed the game in a mixed family between sisters who support the lions of Teranga on one side and the national Syli on the other.
