“Economist”: Austria “useful idiot” of Putin

According to the British magazine “The Economist”, Austria is the second most important henchman of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Europe. The ranking of “Putin’s useful idiots”, which the “Economist” lists in its current issue, is led by Hungary under right-wing conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Greece follows in third place.

Orban is “Moscow’s most obvious” henchman, writes the magazine. The second European government named is Austria, which “more quietly but also profitably has largely stayed out of the fray, citing its non-NATO membership and its self-proclaimed role as a bridge between East and West, and Ukraine has offered little help while trade with Russia has increased,” writes The Economist.

The magazine also names Greece, Cyprus and non-EU countries Turkey and Serbia as Putin’s accomplices in Europe. The Economist counts Switzerland and Sweden among the countries that “transform apparently noble intentions into a policy that warms Mr. Putin’s heart”. In the case of the Confederation, this is argued with the blockade of arms deliveries to Ukraine from third countries, citing neutrality. In Sweden’s case, authorizing the public burning of the Koran angered Turkey, which vetoed Sweden’s NATO entry, and provoked mockery from Putin.
