economical and ecological, LPG is a hit in France

According to the latest barometer published by France Gaz Liquide, the distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exploded in 2022, indicates Midi Libre.

While prices at the pump have experienced peaks never reached in 2022, and traffic restrictions force people to adopt new behaviors at the wheel, LPG is largely doing well, explains Midi Libre. In France, the 2022 automotive market is down 7.8% compared to 2021.

However, the market for LPG vehicles is on the rise. In 2022, 69,940 new LPG vehicles were sold, including 46,849 new ones.

That’s a 1% increase in sales. The distribution of LPG fuel increased by 68.7% in one year.

Multiple explanations

This success can be explained by many points. The first being the increase in models compatible with this fuel offered for sale. However, it is Dacia, a subsidiary of the Renault group, which alone generates a third of the sales of LPG-compatible vehicles in France. Second aspect: LPG is recognized as being a greener gas. Indeed, it can emit up to 80% less CO2 than gasoline. It is therefore classified crit’air 1, regardless of the model of the car, which allows it to be driven in any area.

But the main factor that explains the rise in sales of LPG-compatible vehicles remains the price at the pump. Indeed, following a dark year 2022 for fuel prices, the average price of LPG has fluctuated between 0.74 and 0.90 euros per liter over the past twelve months. Today, 2,000 stations distribute LPG in France, ie one in five. This gas is also partly produced in France and is not imported from Russia, which guarantees, with the current context, to have a stable price and supply throughout the year.
