Economic inequality in Greece decreased by 2.4% since 2015 (34.2% in 2015), according to ELSTAT’s 2023 household income and living conditions survey.
At the same time, according to her research ELSTATthe Gini coefficient was estimated in 2023 at 31.8%, recording an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to 2022. The above percentage is interpreted as follows: if we choose two random people from the population, we expect their income to differ by 31.8% of average equivalent disposable income.
Also, according to newsit, the data on the distribution of income in quartiles express the percentage of the total national equivalent income held by each of four (equal) sections of the population. Specifically, if we rank the individuals in the population in ascending order based on their income (lowest to highest) and then divide the population into four equal parts (based on the total number of individuals), we get the following:
- the 25% of the population in the 1st quartile, with the lowest income, owns 10.4% of the total national equivalent disposable income, a percentage increased by 0.1 percentage points compared to 2022.
- the 25% of the population in the 4th quartile, with the highest income, owns 45.7% of the total national equivalent disposable income, a percentage increased by 0.4 percentage points compared to 2022.
- 50% of the population in the 2nd and 3rd quartiles, with middle incomes, own 44% of the national disposable income, a percentage reduced by 0.4 percentage points compared to 2022.
- the highest individual annual equivalent income for the 1st quarter amounts to 7,030 euros.
- the lowest individual annual equivalent income for the 4th quarter amounts to 13,850 euros.
