Breitling announces partnership with Climate Impulse for pioneering hydrogen-powered green plane mission

Breitling, the luxury Swiss watch brand known for its pioneering spirit in aviation, proudly announces its partnership with Climate Impulse, the latest venture from Swiss explorer and climate advocate Bertrand Piccard. This collaboration reinforces Breitling’s continued support of Piccard, a long-time brand ambassador, who is developing the groundbreaking Climate Impulse: the first non-stop, zero-emissions flight around the world in an environmentally friendly, hydrogen-powered plane.

Its estimated duration is nine days and the project is designed to inspire climate initiatives.

Bertrand Piccard, a serial explorer and clean technology pioneer, has a deeply rooted history with Breitling, having been supported by the Swiss brand during the Breitling Orbiter missions, three cutting-edge voyages that made Piccard the first to fly a balloon. nonstop around the globe in 1999. Now, Breitling is once once more at Piccard’s side as an Official Partner, as he embarks on another historic trip, scheduled for 2028: the first nonstop, zero-emissions trip around the world, in a hydrogen-powered plane.

Development of instruments and parts

Breitling’s aviation heritage began in the 1930s, when its Huit Aviation division developed precision instruments for airplane cockpits and pilot chronographs for military aviators. With the rise of airlines, the brand became “the official supplier of global aviation” with its Navitimer chronograph, equipped with a computational slide rule, ideal for commercial airline crews. Today, Breitling’s Professional line of digital-analog aviation watches continues to serve pilots on test flights and in extreme conditions – like those Piccard and his team will face on their historic new voyage.
In a statement regarding the Climate Impulse mission, Breitling CEO Georges Kern said: “Breitling has always been at the forefront of aviation and our partnership with Climate Impulse is the next big step in this commitment. By supporting Bertrand Piccard and his team, we are championing the future of sustainable aviation.”

Bertrand Piccard, whose pioneering achievements also include the first solar-powered around-the-world flight – Solar Impulse, 2016 – emphasized the importance of presenting climate action in a more positive light: “We must change the narrative of ecology, sacrifice and from fear to stimulate enthusiasm and hope. Realistic solutions will bring people together, from citizens and green activists to political and business leaders.”

Raphaël Dinelli, an experienced sailor, pilot and composites engineer will join Piccard on this new adventure. Dinelli brings his expertise in renewable energy and eco-innovations to the Climate Impulse project, leading the construction of this revolutionary plane by his company 49Sud.

The project aims to showcase the potential of hydrogen-powered flights as a sustainable alternative for future aviation and revolutionize the heavy cargo transport sector. Furthermore, Climate Impulse wants to send a powerful message that it is possible to modernize and reduce carbon emissions in the world.

With a shared vision of innovation and cooperation, Piccard, Dinelli and their teams, together with Breitling, are poised to make history once once more, inspiring a new generation of environmental stewardship.

Ecological plane flight schedule – Climate Impulse:

• 2024 – 2026: Construction of the ecological plane
• 2026 – 2027: Test flights
• 2028: First non-stop round-the-world flight

SOBRE BERTRAND PICCARD

A serial explorer, psychiatrist and clean technology pioneer who combines innovation and adventure to face the great challenges of our time. Born into a legendary family of explorers who conquered the stratosphere and the abyss, Bertrand Piccard made history by achieving two unprecedented aeronautical feats: non-stop around the world in a balloon and, more recently, in a solar-powered plane without any fuel. A pioneer in approaching ecology from the perspective of economic growth, Piccard has been promoting renewable energy and clean technologies since the early 2000s.

His dual identity as a psychiatrist and explorer allows him to act as a speaker and interlocutor for large institutions, sharing his vision of “qualitative economics” that reconciles ecology and economics. With his Solar Impulse Foundation, he has achieved his goal of identifying more than 1,500 “Efficient Solutions,” which he is now seeking to gain the attention of political and industrial leaders to enable them to achieve their climate goals.

A humanist, this former United Nations ambassador for the environment uses his reputation to promote progress, sustainability and quality of life, three themes reflected in his efforts to join forces at work and encourage non-partisan political action to modernize current legislation.
The new hydrogen-powered plane project, Climate Impulse, is part of Piccard’s passion for exploring new ways of acting and thinking.
