A new photo published by NASA, in which we see a large portion of the American continent covered by the shadow of the Moon, has fascinated Internet users since Tuesday.

The photo, captured by a satellite during the annular solar eclipse of October 14, was shared by the American agency on the social network X. We see the silhouette of the star emerging above Texas.

“About 1.5 million miles from Earth, the Moon’s shadow covered southeast Texas,” NASA explains in its tweet.

An annular eclipse, unlike a total solar eclipse, occurs when the Moon is too far from the Sun to block its light, according to NASA. The star follows an elliptical orbit around the Earth, and the Moon was at the farthest point from the Sun when the phenomenon occurred. The passage of the Moon creates what is called a ring of fire.

NASA claimed that the celestial spectacle was partially visible across the United States, Mexico as well as several South American states. People who were in the path of the Moon were able to get a better view of the phenomenon. It is this point that the shadow of the Moon covers.

The next annular eclipse will take place on June 21, 2039. However, a total eclipse will be visible in the American sky on April 8, 2024.
