ECDC identifies 450 cases of acute childhood hepatitis worldwide

Italy (35) and Spain (22) have recorded the highest number of cases within the European Union. In the rest of the EU countries, the number remains below ten. Belgium has so far had three children with the disease. Outside the European Union, the United Kingdom has 163 infected children under the age of 16. Eleven of these children have since received liver transplants.

There are 181 cases of acute hepatitis in the rest of the world, including 109 in the United States, 16 in Brazil, 15 in Indonesia, 12 in Israel and 7 in Canada. Of these 450 cases, 11 died.

Overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 348 cases.
