ECD processes climate action against Norway – the parties submit new arguments

This is stated by Greenpeace in a press release.

The two environmental organizations hope to have Norwegian oil policy judged to be in breach of the human rights convention. They ask the court to state that states are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions as a result of oil and gas.

The case that the ECtHR will now deal with dates from 2016.

The environmental organizations believe that it is against basic human rights to allow Norwegian oil drilling in the Barents Sea during a climate crisis.

After losing the so-called climate action in the Supreme Court in 2020, Greenpeace, Natur og Ungdom and six young climate activists in 2021 appealed the case to the European Court of Justice.

In April this year, Switzerland was convicted of human rights violations for not having done enough to protect its citizens from dangerous climate change. It is in the light of this judgment that the ECtHR will now deal with Norwegian environmental organisations’ complaint against Norway, according to Greenpeace.

In addition, the environmental organizations have started a new climate lawsuit against the state. They believe the state has broken the law by approving the plans for the development and operation of the new oil fields Tyrving, Breidablikk and Yggdrasil in the North Sea. In January, the Oslo District Court ruled that the three permits are invalid. The state has appealed the case to the Court of Appeal.
