Once once more the “Eagles” were three goals behind, but this time they were unable to catch up. In the end, the blue-whites had to admit defeat to Linzer, who were better and more efficient that evening, with 2:5 goals.
Alexander Rauchwald and Co. started the match somewhat cautiously. Linz, on the other hand, really increased the pace in the first few minutes. So it came as no surprise that the Upper Austrians also took the lead in the 11th minute: Shawn St. Amant scored the goal to make it 0-1. After that, the “Eagles” picked themselves up and found their way into the match much better. Anthony Luciani had the best chance to equalize in the 15th minute when he was numerically superior, but he was denied from close range by Linz goalie Thomas Höneckl. Likewise, other good scoring opportunities for the “Adler” remained unused.
The Linzers started the middle period with a power play lasting around one minute. Andrew Desjardins still had to serve a remaining penalty from the first third. The penalty had just expired, but a mistake by VSV goalie JP Lamoureux, who lost his target behind the goal, made goal number two possible for Linz. The goalscorer this time: Emilio Romig. Villach’s next chance to gain a majority came in the 24th minute: but once more the “Eagles” didn’t want to score. In return, Linz did better and increased the lead to 0:3 following a long shot from Gert Kragl (27th). But in the 29th minute the spell was broken: Alexander Rauchwald slammed the puck into the Linz goal from an acute angle – 1:3. The blue-whites followed up and Maxi Rebernig made it 2-3 (38th) with a one-timer from a pass from John Hughes. But just in the middle of a better phase for the “Adlers”, Brian Lebler scored from a counterattack to make it 2:4 (39th).
Just seven seconds into the final third, Marco Richter had to sit in the penalty box for two minutes for tripping. The “Eagles” survived this delicate phase without conceding another goal. But just a few seconds later Linz’s next goal – Logan Roe made it 2:5 (43′). The match was decided early. Also because the guests from Linz hardly allowed anything and despite two outnumbered games shortly before the end there was nothing worthwhile for the Blue-Whites. In the end, the guests from the steel city deservedly won with 2:5 goals.
