A male patient who has felt ‘diabetic’ since his mid-40s. I was worried that diabetes might have come to me as well, so I went to the hospital and the number came out quite high. This patient’s fasting blood sugar was 129 mg/dl. A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dl or higher is diabetes. However, the hospital diagnosed this patient as prediabetes, not diabetes. Prediabetes refers to the pre-diabetes stage. In this patient, the fasting blood sugar level was slightly exceeded, but the glycated hemoglobin level did not meet the diabetes standard. So, what is the pre-diabetes, pre-diabetes condition?

◆ What if I ignore ‘diabetes’?

A male patient in his early 60s first learned that he had ‘diabetes’ during a medical examination 10 years ago. However, he did not take it seriously, and only recently developed diabetes symptoms and went to the hospital. As a result of the test, both the fasting blood glucose level and the glycated hemoglobin level exceeded the standard for diabetes, and even complications occurred. It is a situation in which the feet cannot feel the vibration because they have no sensation, and they cannot even feel the cold and warm feeling. Not only his feet, but his eyes were also bleeding and exuding. A patient who knew that he had a pre-diabetic state with ‘diabetes’ through a health check-up 10 years ago, but ended up with diabetic complications because he did not manage it properly. ◆ Obesity can lead to diabetes and metabolic syndrome

A male patient in his early 50s became obese due to his long working life and unavoidable drinking parties. Because of this, he was already diagnosed with diabetes 4 years ago and is now suspected of having high blood pressure. In addition, the level of LDL, which is bad cholesterol, is high, and there is concern regarding metabolic syndrome. As such, an obese body raises blood sugar levels, leading to diabetes as well as metabolic syndrome. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening, such as myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction.
