ChatGPT will ultimately not make its entry, for the moment, into the editorial offices of daily newspapers The Republican East et Vosges Morning. It was the general director of the two titles belonging to the EBRA press group, Christophe Mahieu, who announced his choice to backtrack during a social and economic committee (CSE) on Thursday October 26, according to information from Monde, confirming those of Figaro. The manager having closed the information-consultation on the experimentation of generative artificial intelligence (AI), the tests will, in fact, not be carried out.

Until now the EBRA group wanted to test the use of ChatGPT “within the strict framework of proofreading and correction of content” proposed by their local press correspondents. “The arrival of generative AI in editorial offices is inevitable and our objective is to anticipate it by testing the tools available in our information processing processes”defended Mr. Mahieu once more recently.

The management of The Republican East and of Vosges Morning specified that “the choice, the hierarchy of information, the first and last proofreading as well as the final validation for publication” would remain the responsibility of editorial journalists. And, “obviously, the journalist, editorial secretary [qui met en page les articles] may also modify this corrected content if this seems necessary and relevant”.

The management of the regional press group had, finally, assured that the experimentation of the artificial intelligence tool would not have an impact on jobs.

“Simply test the “office functions””

“Like the spelling correction tools used for years by journalists in our editorial offices, this is simply a matter of testing the “office functions” of this AI tool” what is the ChatGPT conversational robot, developed by the American company OpenAI, added Mr. Mahieu on Wednesday, in a statement to Agence France-Presse.

In a press release, the National Union of Journalists (SNJ) replied that it “will not let[it] not the keys of information to computers ». “The charters relating to journalistic deontology and ethics are not obsolete. They must impose themselves on AI, it is non-negotiable”he insisted once more before the CSE on Thursday.

The EBRA group, owned by Crédit Mutuel, is the leading regional daily press group, with nine titles, including Alsace, Latest News from Alsace, Progresscovering twenty-three departments in eastern France.
