Researchers at King’s College London have found that eating blueberries has a positive effect on the brain and blood vessels of older people. The results were published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN).

As people age, they become more susceptible to cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Cognitive function also declines faster in people over 60 years of age. The authors tried to find ways to slow down or prevent these age-related changes.

The study involved 61 people aged 65 to 80 years. They were divided into two groups: one took a placebo, and the second – 26 grams of blueberry powder.

The authors found that older adults who consumed blueberry powder daily for 12 weeks had healthier blood vessels and performed better on cognitive tasks compared to the placebo group.

One group of substances that can prevent these health problems are polyphenols. Anthocyanins are a type of polyphenol found in blueberries. It is due to him that the berry has a blue color.

Anthocyanins are strong antioxidants, neutralize the action of free radicals, inhibit the growth of tumors, and have a beneficial effect on the human body. Therefore, vegetables and fruits of bright colors are considered beneficial for the body.
