potato crop
Books – Amsaleh:
Hussein Abu Saddam, Chairman of the Farmers’ Syndicate, has revealed the reasons why he is calling on citizens to find alternatives to potatoes, rather than focusing on demands to stop potato exports due to high prices.
In a special statement to Masrawi, Abu Saddam said: Egypt has made extensive efforts to open foreign potato export markets and highlight its own advantages. We have done so much, but stopping exports to meet local demand is unreasonable.
Abu Saddam explained that Egypt grows 600,000 acres of potatoes every year, divided into three batches: 30% for the summer batch, 10% for the autumn batch, and 60% for the winter batch, explaining the reasons for the increase in potato prices. The current (summer) batch of potato seeds for the local market was imported to the European market last December and is used to grow the crops currently on display at the market.
He went on to say: This incident resulted in a reduction in import volume to 115,000 tons, while our demand was 145,000 tons, and resulted in a reduction in the proportion of potato cultivated land in the current period and an increase in prices.
Abu Saddam called on citizens to look for alternatives to potatoes during the current period, such as morohia, beans, etc.
He stressed the need to continue exporting abroad and ignore requests to stop exports.
In recent days, potato prices have increased in various markets, with the price of one kilogram reaching 40 kilograms in some areas.
