Folic acid is an important vitamin for women at all stages of their lives. The National Institutes of Health recommends consuming 400 micrograms of it daily, whether from food or nutritional supplements for adults, to maintain health. It is a water-soluble vitamin, so the body gets rid of it in the urine and does not store it.

Folic acid should be taken daily for the following reasons:
