“Eat 3 Meals a Day: The Importance of Regular Meal Schedule for Cardiovascular Health and Weight Management”

2023-05-11 04:30:00

The research covers 24,011 American adults over the age of 40 and concludes that skipping breakfast is associated with a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, while skipping lunch or dinner is associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality.

The increase in these risks might also be a consequence of eating meals too close together, so it is recommended to eat at least two to three meals, spread throughout the day.

Eat 3 meals a day

30% of study participants said they regularly eat less than three meals a day. It seems that the latter are more likely, according to the data, to be male, younger than the others, less educated and with a lower than average income.

Meal skipping is also found to be more common among those who smoke, drink more alcohol, are food insecure, and consume fewer calories overall.

However, beware of hasty correlations: this study does not establish a direct causal link between skipping meals and early health problems, it is not complete enough for that. However, it highlights the existence of an association between two phenomena that deserves further investigation.

The research team has already tried to neutralize several lifestyle factors, such as smoking for example.

But does skipping a meal make you lose weight?

Getting into the habit of skipping meals in an effort to lose weight would have the opposite effect. You are at risk of gaining weight for several reasons:

  • By skipping a meal, it is very likely that you will be very hungry at the next meal and therefore you will eat a lot more
than if you hadn’t skipped a meal.
  • Not eating for too long increases the risk of fatigue during the day.
However, when you are tired, you are unconsciously attracted to energy foods that are often fatty and/or sweet.
  • If you skip the evening meal, you may wake up hungry in the middle of the night. Again, your reflex is not to prepare a healthy dish
at 4am but rather to take what comes to hand in the fridge and cupboards.
  • Deprived of food for long hours, the body does indeed draw on its sugar reserves, but this period of time
is too short for it to draw on its fat reserves. The weight loss is therefore not sustainable.

In short, to lose weight, it is better to maintain your three meals a day and an followingnoon snack (optional) by making sure to include healthy foods rather than skipping a meal and risking overeating the next one!
