Eastern Japan prepares for fierce typhoon – over 300,000 asked to evacuate

The Japan Meteorological Agency JMA estimates that the typhoon will reach the sea near Tokyo during Friday evening and continue north in the Kanto region and towards the Tohoku region early Saturday.

Ampil is expected to bring with it strong wind gusts of up to 45 meters per second, as well as heavy rainfall, which can, among other things, lead to floods and landslides.

Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture in Tohoku has issued an evacuation order for around 323,000 residents. In the city of Mobara in Chiba Prefecture, around 18,500 people have been told to leave the area.

Warning against violent gusts of wind

The JMA has warned against staying around rivers and beaches and asked people to be aware of the strong gusts of wind. The Meteorological Institute has classified the typhoon as “very strong”.

– We predict extreme wind gusts and violent activity in the sea, says meteorologist Shuichi Tachihara in JMA.

On its website, the JMA also warns that the violent winds in Kanto can lead to injuries from flying objects, and that the most extreme gusts can even tip over cars.

Hundreds of cancellations

The Shinkansen bullet train has suspended all departures between Tokyo and Nagoya on Friday, and the major airlines ANA and Japan Airlines have canceled hundreds of domestic and international flights at Tokyo’s two main airports, Haneda and Narita.

Over 100,000 people are affected by the flight cancellations, according to Japanese media.

In addition, Disneyland in Tokyo, which usually stays open until 9 p.m., has decided to close at 3 p.m., and Yamato Transport, one of Japan’s largest postal and logistics companies, has said it will not deliver mail on Fridays and Saturdays.

A number of other restaurants and shops in Kanto and Tohoku have also chosen to either close completely or narrow their opening hours in the coming days.
