Eastern Bohemia will be affected by strong storms, there is a risk of local flooding

Very strong storms with torrential rain, hail and gusty winds will affect mainly the eastern half of the country today. In the followingnoon and evening it will arrive in the eastern part of Bohemia and the west of Moravia and Silesia, until night there is a threat of dangerous meteorological phenomena in the east of Moravia and Silesia. The meteorologist’s current warning for very strong thunderstorms there will not expire until one hour following midnight. In areas affected by heavy rainfall, the levels of smaller rivers in particular can rise rapidly. There is also a risk of local flooding.

Even before the cold front, meteorologists expect tropical temperatures over 30 degrees, with the exception of the west and north-west of Bohemia, in the south of Moravia it can exceptionally be 35 degrees. “In connection with the passage of a cold front from the west, with the exception of the western half of Bohemia, strong and very strong thunderstorms may occur in the eastern half of the territory,” said the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ).

Very strong storms in the east of the Czech Republic will be accompanied by torrential rainfall of around 50 millimeters, exceptionally even 70 millimeters, more than three centimeter hail and gusts of wind with a speed of 90 kilometers per hour. In the area with a warning for strong thunderstorms with a lower level of danger, which refers to the belt from the Jizerské hory and Krkonoše mountains in the north of the country through Prague and central Bohemia to the south of Bohemia, less heavy precipitation, smaller hail and milder winds are expected.

In areas affected by storms, the levels of especially smaller streams will quickly respond with rises. “The highest probability that the first level of flood activity will be exceeded is in the upper Morava and Odra basins. However, significant rises in water levels, rapid runoff of water from the landscape and a high risk of local flooding cannot be ruled out in other watersheds where there is high soil saturation (east and northeast of the Czech Republic),” the meteorologists added.

Part of the republic has already been affected by intense storms and flash floods in the past few days, for example some municipalities in Domažlicka or Přerovsk.

After a hot weekend with storms, it will cool down, with temperatures not exceeding 24 degrees Celsius early next week, with showers. Before the long weekend, the clouds will begin to disappear and it will warm up to 29 degrees.
