«While I call for respect for the principles of international law, I hope for a general exchange of all prisoners between Russia and Ukraine: all for all! Furthermore, I once once more appeal for the possibility of access to humanitarian aid in Gaza to be guaranteed, once once more urging a prompt release of the hostages kidnapped on 7 October and an immediate ceasefire in the Strip”. Pope Francis said this in his Easter message, greeted by loud applause from those present in St. Peter’s Square. Pope Francis then imparted the “Urbi et Orbi” Blessing.
Open paths of peace for tormented populations at war
The Holy Father continued: «Today we turn our gaze first of all towards the Holy City of Jerusalem, witness to the mystery of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus and to all the Christian communities of the Holy Land. My thoughts go above all to the victims of the many conflicts taking place in the world, starting with those in Israel and Palestine, and in Ukraine. May the Risen Christ open a path of peace for the tormented populations of those regions.”
Stop the winds of war in Europe and the Mediterranean
Pope Francis’ strong message is to stop all the winds of war. «Let us not allow the ongoing hostilities to continue to have serious repercussions on the civilian population, now exhausted, and above all on children – he said -. How much suffering we see in the eyes of children. The children in those war lands forgot to smile. With their gaze they ask us: why? Why so much death? Why so much destruction? War is always an absurdity and a defeat! Let us not let ever stronger winds of war blow over Europe and the Mediterranean. Don’t give in to the logic of weapons and rearmament. Peace is never built with weapons, but by holding out hands and opening hearts.” Peace also in Syria, Lebanon, the Caucasus, Haiti, Myanmar, Africa.
Terrorists repent and convert, I pray for victims
«May the risen Christ open a path of hope to people who in other parts of the world suffer violence, conflicts, food insecurity, as well as the effects of climate change. Give comfort to the victims of every form of terrorism. We pray for those who have lost their lives and we implore the repentance and conversion of the perpetrators of such crimes”, continued Pope Francis.
Solidarity towards migrants and the poorest
The Holy Father then commented: «May the Risen One shine his light on migrants and those who are going through a period of economic difficulty, offering them comfort and hope in their time of need. May Christ guide all people of good will to unite in solidarity, to face together the many challenges that loom over the poorest families in their search for a better life and happiness.” «He May the light of the resurrection illuminate our minds and convert our hearts, making us aware of the value of every human life, which must be welcomed, protected and loved».
