At the same time, in the middle of the month, there is a “draw” for the “basket of godparents”, with officials of the competent Ministry of Development (YPAN) expressing their optimism regarding the implementation of the initiative again this year.

More specifically, regarding the “Easter basket”, an official of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with knowledge of the subject pointed out to “ET” on Sunday that discussions on its content will begin within the next few days. In any case, he clarified that “…the lamb and the goat cannot be missing from the “Easter basket””.

It is recalled that last year the specific “basket”, in addition to the above (i.e. in addition to lamb and goat), also contained chocolate eggs and a bun. In fact, these four categories of goods had been added to the “fixed” that the “household basket” has only for the Easter season.

In the current phase, however, the cost of lamb in supermarkets ranges from 11.83 euros to 11.89 euros per kilo (data 1st.3.2024 from e-consumer), goat costs 11.78 to 12.95 respectively euro per kilo. The price for the bun is between 2.39 and 2.67 euros (380 grams).

It is worth noting that last year, before the “Easter basket” came into force, the prices for lamb and goat were more economical than this year’s corresponding ones, while for tsoureki they started at the same levels and reached higher ones.

In particular, in 2023, just before the “Easter basket” came into force (27/3), lamb cost 10.84 – 10.90 euros per kilo, goat 11.11 – 11.95 euros per kilo and tsureki 2.39 – 2.98 euros for 380 grams. After the initiative was activated (premiere on 5/4), on 7/4, for example, the costs were: for lamb from 9.78 to 9.95 euros (11 euros per kilo in neighborhood butchers), for goat from 10.45 to 10.90 euros (around 12 euros a kilo cost in the neighborhood butchers) and for the bun from 2.39 to 2.66 euros.

In relation to the “basket of godparents”, the same sources noted that it is most likely that this initiative will also “run”. However, in order to determine whether the businesses directly involved can support it, a discussion with the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs should precede.

According to information, within the next few days, consultations will begin with the Associations of large technology chains and toy stores. The aim is to make the relevant decision by the middle of the month, in order to then make the planned announcements by the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Last year, however, the “godfather’s basket” was attended by stores with toys and technology items, offering at affordable prices for consumers products that belonged to the following categories: 1) Easter candles-toys, 2) board/puzzles, 3) toys with dolls , dollhouses and other accessories (imitation toys), 4) baby toys, 5) action figures, 6) construction and creation toys (eg bricks), 7) vehicles – remote control, 8) electronic toys, 9) sports toys ( eg balls, children’s basketballs and goals), 10) soft toys, 11) musical toys and 12) chocolate eggs and the like (optional).

It is noted that consumers who believe they have been defrauded, finding that they have been taken advantage of, can submit their complaint to the email address. For complaints and more information, they can also call the four-digit number 1520.

In fact, as part of the upgrade of the e-consumer platform, in the near future, the possibility will be provided in the event that the consumer finds that the prices on the platform do not match those in the physical store, to file an electronic complaint by sending a relevant photo, so that the competent service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (DIMEA) to undertake the investigation of each case.
