THE East Kalimantan (Kaltim) Provincial Government is targeting a top five position in the XXI/2024 PON Aceh-North Sumatra on September 8-20, by winning at least 35 gold medals.
“The result of coordination with KONI Kaltim, our realistic target is 35-40 gold medals. The target is based on the results of technical evaluation after the regional training center (pelatda) and sports intelligence,” said Head of Sports Achievement Improvement of the East Kalimantan Youth and Sports Agency (Dispora) Rasman Rading as reported by Antara, Wednesday (4/9).
A number of sports that underlie the optimism of the East Kalimantan Contingent to win the gold medal are sailing, kempo, silat, archery, fencing, shooting, roller skating, chess, taekwondo, hockey, and e-sports.
Referring to the results of the 2023 PON qualification, Rasman said 50 branches were able to win medals. Therefore, East Kalimantan is boosting all sports branches of the regional training center that will compete in the 2024 PON.
Another reason behind the optimism of the East Kalimantan Contingent in achieving the target is the results of the technical evaluation and sports intelligence that assess the strength of the opposing team. In addition, mental training during the training camp has also been carried out by the East Kalimantan regional training center.
The East Kalimantan Provincial Government, Rasman continued, has budgeted IDR 175 billion for the 2024 PON. The budget allocation is allocated for the regional training camp, consumption, travel and accommodation costs while in Aceh and North Sumatra, including pocket money for athletes and coaches.
