EAST SHORE, Calif. (AP) — Several earthquakes have struck a large swath of northern California this week, but only minor damage has been reported so far.
A movement of 5.5 degrees, with an epicenter in the tourist region of Lake Almanor in the Sierra Nevada, occurred at 4:19 p.m. on Thursday with an followingshock of 5.2 at 3:18 a.m. on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
Local businesses were cleaning up minor damage in the area, regarding 180 miles (290 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco, ABC10 television reported.
“A lot of broken glass, a lot of broken dishes, a lot of broken liquor upstairs,” Stephanie Hughes, a local restaurant manager, told the station following Thursday’s quake. “Everything was shaking. Customers were fleeing onto the grass outside,” Hughes added.
People reported feeling the quake as far as Sacramento, regarding 160 miles (260 kilometers) to the south.
The magnitude 5.5 quake was the strongest in California since the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence, with one measuring a magnitude 7.1, reported Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones, who now runs a center that focuses on make communities more resilient to disasters.
