At around 23:25 on March 18 (Friday), there was an earthquake observing a maximum seismic intensity of 5 upper in Iwate Prefecture.

The epicenter is off the coast of Iwate prefecture, the depth of the epicenter is regarding 20km, and the magnitude of the earthquake is estimated to be 5.5.

There is no need to worry regarding the tsunami caused by this earthquake.

Regarding this earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued an Earthquake Early Warning (warning).

In areas with strong shaking, be careful of earthquakes with a maximum seismic intensity of 5 or higher for regarding a week following the occurrence of the earthquake. In particular, large-scale earthquakes often occur in the next few days.

Although the magnitude of the earthquake is smaller than that of the day before yesterday (energy is estimated to be regarding one hundredth), the epicenter was close to the land and shallow, so it seems that strong shaking struck a relatively narrow area.

According to the preliminary analysis of the Japan Meteorological Agency, the mechanism of the earthquake seems to be a type with a tension axis in the north-northwest-south-southeast direction, including a normal fault component and a strike-slip component. It is a focal mechanism different from the earthquake off the coast of Fukushima prefecture the day before yesterday, and it is thought that it is not directly related. Let’s review our daily preparations.

In Iwate and Aomori prefectures, where the shaking was strong, it will snow until following noon on Saturday, 19th. Keep away from dangerous areas such as steep slopes in areas with strong shaking. Beware of strong winds.
