Earthquake in the Black Sea: Crimea’s Seismic History and Recent Activity

A strong earthquake was recorded on the morning of June 22, at 5:42 Moscow time, in the Black Sea off the coast of the Crimean Peninsula, informed European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The magnitude was 4.6, the epicenter was located 59 kilometers from Sevastopol and 51 kilometers from Balaklava at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Crimea is located on the outskirts of the Mediterranean (Alpine-Himalayan) folded belt, it is a seismically hazardous region. The strongest earthquake there was recorded in September 1927. According to some reports, the magnitude reached 9, in Yalta more than 70% of the buildings were destroyed.

March 23 in Sochi, according to the Obninsk seismological station, there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale with an intensity of 2-3 points.

Recall that on February 6 in Turkey in the province of Kahramanmaras, earthquakes of magnitude 7.6 and 7.7 occurred, and another one, of magnitude 5.6, on February 27 in Malatya. More than 50 thousand people died.
