Port-au-Prince, Haiti. An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 shook southern Haiti early Tuesday, causing at least three deaths and several injuries, according to authorities.

The quake struck before dawn near the coastal town of Jeremie at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), according to the US Geological Survey.

The three bodies were found under a collapsed house where rescuers were searching for more people, Frankel Maginaire of the Haitian Civil Protection Agency in Jeremie told The Associated Press.

Several children were hospitalized to be treated for injuries sustained after running away in a panic.

Crowds of people crowded the streets after the quake, eager for aftershocks.

The quake occurred almost a year after another magnitude 7.2 that shook southern Haiti, with Les Cayes as the most affected area, and killed more than 2,200 people. Some of those who lost their homes last August continue to live in camps.

In 2010, a magnitude 7 earthquake near Port-au-Prince, the densely populated capital, killed at least 200,000 people and left widespread damage to buildings.
