Long-time Don Bosco project partners are asking for donations for quick help
Vienna (OTS) – „Our facilities in the province affected by the quake are so far intact, we are helping the victims of the quake in our catchment area.”. This is what Father Augusty Pulickal Antony, SDB, long-time project partner of the Austrian aid organization Jugend Eine Welt, reports just a few hours following the severe earthquake in Nepal. At the same time, Father Augusty is asking for support so that the many earthquake victims can now be helped quickly with the bare necessities.
On Saturday night, a severe earthquake struck northwestern Nepal. The districts most affected by the quake are Jajarkot and Rukum in Karnali province, around 400 kilometers northwest of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. The true extent of the disaster in the remote mountain region might not yet be estimated on Saturday. It is feared that there will be far more deaths than the number of around 130 mentioned in initial reports.
„There are probably several hundred people affected“, said Father Augusty, head of the Don Bosco project partners in Nepal, in an initial conversation with Jugend Eine Welt. In any case, the Don Bosco partners on site will use all available means to support the earthquake survivors. “I would like to thank you in advance for all the help we receive from outside“, so Pater Augusty.
„Father Augusty visited us here in Vienna just last September“, reports Jugend Eine Welt managing director Reinhard Heiserer. The main focus was on the further expansion of the school infrastructure in the country, in particular the construction of a school in Chinchu in the current quake region. This school can be built once the necessary funds are available.
After the devastating earthquake in Nepal in 2015, the Jugend Eine Welt partners with support from Austria were able to ensure that a total of 10 schools were rebuilt within 18 months. “We will continue to comply with our partners’ requests following the new earthquake so that they can help people quickly,” explains Heiserer.
