Vienna (OTS) On Saturday night, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 shook areas around Marrakesh, Agadir and Taroudant. The first aftershocks followed early in the morning. Countless buildings were destroyed and large parts of the country were devastated. According to the Moroccan Interior Ministry, the death toll is at least 800 people and hundreds more people were injured – authorities believe the number of victims will rise.

“The Moroccan authorities are currently coordinating emergency relief efforts and have mobilized hospitals and firefighters. Our local CARE teams are ready to support the effort. We are already shifting the focus of our ongoing programs to the most affected regions,” says Andrea Barschdorf-Hager, Managing Director of CARE Austria. “The humanitarian situation is increasingly deteriorating. Families are now most in need of water, food, hygiene products, healthcare and safe housing.”
