The earthquake occurred in the town of Artux, located about 45 kilometers from the city of Kashgar, the most populated in the province with more than 4.5 million inhabitants, with an epicenter 10 kilometers deep.

Artux, a county-level city, capital of Kizilsu Prefecture, is located about 65 kilometers from the border with Kyrgyzstan, and about 1,049 kilometers from Xinjiang’s capital, Urumqi.
At the moment, no damage or fatalities have been reported from the earthquake, which was “clearly” felt in nearby areas, according to the Chinese seismological agency.
