Earthquake hits central Syria, felt in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel

Syria – The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) announced on Monday evening that an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck the eastern city of Hama (central) at 11:56 p.m. local time.

This came according to what the agency reported from the head of the National Earthquake Center, Raed Ahmed.

Ahmed reported that an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck east of Hama city at 11:56 p.m. (8:56 GMT).

For its part, the Jordanian Seismological Observatory announced that an earthquake measuring 5.4 degrees struck northern Syria, and its aftershocks reached several countries in the region.

The observatory (governmental) stated in a statement that “an earthquake was recorded on Monday at 11:55 pm Amman time in northern Syria with a magnitude of 5.4 at a depth of 10 km.”

He added that “an earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was detected at 9:30 pm Amman time in the same area as the earthquake that occurred at 11:55 pm.”

Later, the Jordanian Observatory stated that “an aftershock was detected at the same location as the main earthquake.”

He said: “An earthquake was recorded today, Tuesday, 08/13/2024, at 12:30 a.m. Amman time, in northern Syria, with a magnitude of 3.9 and a depth of 10 km.”

In turn, the Lebanese News Agency reported that residents of Beirut, Al-Matn, and several areas in the north, reaching Hermel, felt an earthquake at midnight on Monday/Tuesday.

No country immediately reported any material or human damage caused by the earthquake.
