Draw attention to actions for the preservation of the planet. This is one of the objectives of Earth Overshoot Day – Earth Overshoot Day, which this year falls on August 2, according to the Global Footprint Network calculationwhich considers the days when the Earth’s biocapacity is sufficient to provide humanity’s Ecological Footprint.

According to the international research organization, Earth Overshoot Day is given by dividing the amount of ecological resources that the Earth is capable of generating in that year, by the Ecological Footprint of humanity, multiplied by 365 – number of days in a year.

According to Earth Overshoot Day estimates, for 2023, the total Ecological Footprint was up 0.2% year-on-year, while total biocapacity grew by 0.3% over the same period. These combined effects reduced the Footprint to biocapacity ratio by 0.1%.

The survey also shows that the year 2020, marked by blockades resulting from the covid-19 pandemic, registered a sharp initial drop in carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions. At the end of that year, total emissions were 5% lower than those of 2019. In turn, from 2021 to 2022, it is estimated that emissions increased by 1.5%.

The mobilization also meets the warning issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which says 2023 might be the hottest year on record. Furthermore, there is a 66% probability that the average annual temperature near the global surface between 2023 and 2027 will stay more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one year.

For the founder and chief executive of the Latin American Quality Institute (LAQI), Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, Earth Overshoot Day cannot go unnoticed by the corporate world. He also reinforces that the date should not only generate reflections, but actions in the company’s culture, even changing the way of thinking and acting.

“This issue is of great importance and demands attention, not only from governments, but from everyone, especially from the business sector. Through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ESG practices and own publications, we attest to this concern presented by Earth Overshoot Day. If we want to be on the path of Total Responsibility, we need to change our way of thinking and acting”, he concludes.
