This Monday, rain fell heavily once more in our country. But things will move in the right direction from this Tuesday. If we don’t have to wait for bright, beautiful sunshine all day long, it will be brighter, but also colder. “The conditions will change from this Tuesday, in fact,” confirms Pascal Mormal, meteorologist at IRM. We will experience cooler weather, with only 6 or 7 degrees on the menu for the next few days. It will be a little milder on Thursday, but it won’t last. In general, we will be one or two degrees below seasonal averages.”
A change in weather which can be explained by the first descents of polar air of the season. “We will experience winter conditions for the first time in the Ardennes this weekend, with the first frosts, but also potential snowfall. In the center of the country, we expect around two degrees overnight, but local frosts are also expected.”
Who really is Pascal Mormal, “the messenger of bad news”? “Twenty years ago, the weather was a light subject, a filler on the news”
So winter is knocking at our door a little earlier than expected. “In terms of precipitation, the weather will be less rainy than in recent weeks, and that is why we cannot yet guarantee snowfall in the Ardennes. For next week, the first forecasts still suggest cooler than average weather, and this might continue until the beginning of December. For the future, several scenarios exist.”
As a reminder, seasonal models predict a fairly mild December. “There may still be change,” warns Pascal Mormal. That said, we may have a cool week to start, but a very mild month overall.”
“It rained the equivalent of 4 months in 30 days”
This concludes a rainy episode that will be remembered. “What we must not forget is that we are ending an extremely mild autumn. There are 10 days left before the start of meteorological winter and we are on the verge of the second warmest autumn since records began. By integrating the cool forecasts for the coming days, we still arrive at 13.4 degrees. For precipitation, the whole fall is slightly above average. But since mid-October, certain regions such as West Flanders have experienced the equivalent of 4 months of rain in 30 days. Such an episode has never happened since records began.”
