Is spring early this year? We can ask ourselves the question when we see the mildness of current temperatures. Many residents lost their coats in the Toulouse region this Friday followingnoon. And the vegetation comes out of its sleep. This is what we have been seeing for several days at the garden center. “Green spaces of Languedoc” in Saint-Martin-du-Touch. Listen to the France Bleu Occitanie report.

The early spring is now a recurring phenomenon in Occitania according to Patrice Bajan, the garden center’s purchasing manager. “Espaces vertes du Languedoc” which has been working in the sector for 25 years: “Every year, it’s a little earlier. At this season, ten or fifteen years ago, we didn’t offer Mediterranean plants. We brought them in at the end of March or the beginning of April, when we were sure that the frosts would be well finished. Now, these plants, we bring them in at the end of January. I have the impression that It’s been ten years since we’ve had winters severe enough to damage these plants.. We also feel it in the vegetable section: customers will start asking me for tomato plants within two weeks. Whilebefore tomatoes, they were planted in May, never before. What worries me is the speed at which it has evolved in 20 years. I wonder what it will be like in 20 years. It looks very complicated for our gardens and our way of living.”

February 2024 was the second warmest February in the history of weather records.
