In this period dedicated to awareness of bladder cancer, let’s explore a potentially revealing symptom for early detection of this disease which affects between 13,000 and 20,000 individuals in France each year.
The unrecognized symptoms of dreaded bladder cancer remain a reality for the majority of French people. According to a survey by the Merck-Pfizer Alliance, a quarter of French people are unaware of at least one symptom of this insidious disease. However, between 13,000 and 20,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in France, making this cancer the 7th most common.
Mainly prevalent in men (more than 80% of cases) and generally affecting around the age of 50, bladder cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 80% if detected early, but only 5% if diagnosed metastatic. So, knowledge of the symptoms that can facilitate early detection is crucial. As part of Bladder Cancer Awareness Month in May, the French Urology Association (AFU) and the Cancer Bladder France patient association are joining forces to provide information on the signs to watch out for.
