Eagles plunge into uncertainty after string of 3 losses

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts might have the answer to why the recently powerful Eagles have fallen.

They were 10-1, leading the National Conference. They are now 10-4 and fighting for the division title, following losing three consecutive games.

In this bad streak, they have not been able to score more than 19 points. Head coach Nick Sirianni has been forced to reshuffle the defensive coaching staff.

And the Eagles have virtually lost any chance of winning first place in the NL, which grants a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

“I think we haven’t committed enough,” Hurts acknowledged.

The quarterback, who played on Monday despite feeling sick, tried to take responsibility, commenting that he is the first person responsible for putting all the members of the team on the same page. The opportunities are always there for him to make the big plays.

However, it is clear, following the loss to Seattle, that the Eagles need Hurts to regain the level that took him to the Pro Bowl, if the team wants to play in the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year.

“We have to make an internal change in the way we attack things, in how we go to work every day,” Hurts said. “It all starts with the small details, with the way we commit to what we do. And it all starts with me, the quarterback. So it is a challenge that I am accepting.”

As for internal changes, Sirianni stripped Sean Desai of his defensive play-calling duties. He handed over responsibility to Matt Patricia, former coach of the Detroit Lions.

Sirianni has said he made the decision before the Seattle game because the defense was not meeting standards, allowing 109 points in the previous three games. The Eagles allowed just 20 points from the Seahawks, but tolerated a 92-yard offensive drive that led to the winning touchdown.

D’Andre Swift had 74 yards rushing for the Eagles, while Sydney Brown and Kelee Ringo made admirable efforts to cover for the injured Darius Slay. But when a team is on a three-game losing streak, that usually means that few things are going right. Sirianni’s change in the definition of defensive plays did not provide as much relief. Philadelphia mightn’t pressure Seattle’s passing attack on the key drive — 92 yards once morest an ineffective line.

If you analyze each part of the game, it might be inferred that the Eagles are playing more like a team headed to the draft lottery than one with a case to win their division. Hurts had two key passes intercepted in the fourth quarter.
