Tel Aviv – Revealing that moon-eating birds were used to find the bodies of Israelis killed in the October 7 lightning strike by Hamas. Ohad Hatzof, a member of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, said that the search conducted by attaching tracking devices to birds such as hawks and eagles helped to find the remains.
“When the war started, some reservists approached me. They asked if my birds might help in any way. Hatsoff explained that the idea was for a section of the military responsible for finding missing servicemen. Hatzoff is leading a project tracking endangered griffon vultures. They mostly eat dead animals. Apart from eagles, it also includes scavengers like hawks and other birds. The project involves fitting hundreds of birds with GPS trackers to detect their predation patterns, migratory behavior and environmental threats they face.
“One such rare species of sea hawk was spotted in Beri, Gaza Strip on October 23, a day before it returned to Israel following spending the summer in western Russia. I gave the details regarding this to the army and they recovered four dead bodies from there,” explained Hatsoff. It is estimated that 1400 Jews were killed in Israel in the attack by Hamas.
